Conservative Christianity’s Most Outrageous Theologian Speaks Out…Again

For me, getting upset over Ann Coulter’s recent comments about John Edwards is like getting worked up over The Tomb of Jesus—we’ve heard it all before, so we shouldn’t be surprised. I’ve been wary (and weary) of Ann Coulter ever since I read her trenchant commentary or the liberal response to The Passion of the Christ. In case you’ve never read it, here’s what Ms. Coulter said way back in March 2004:

According to liberals, the message of Jesus, which somehow Gibson missed, is something along the lines of “be nice to people” (which to them means “raise taxes on the productive”).

You don’t need a religion like Christianity, which is a rather large and complex endeavor, in order to flag that message. All you need is a moron driving around in a Volvo with a bumper sticker that says “be nice to people.” Being nice to people is, in fact, one of the incidental tenets of Christianity (as opposed to other religions whose tenets are more along the lines of “kill everyone who doesn’t smell bad and doesn’t answer to the name Mohammed”). But to call it the “message” of Jesus requires…well, the brain of Maureen Dowd.

In fact, Jesus’ distinctive message was: People are sinful and need to be redeemed, and this is your lucky day because I’m here to redeem you even though you don’t deserve it, and I have to get the crap kicked out of me to do it. That is the reason He is called “Christ the Redeemer” rather than “Christ the Moron Driving Around in a Volvo With a ‘Be Nice to People’ Bumper Sticker on It.”

For as odious as this is, I have to admit that Ms. Coulter has a point. Your average liberal version of Jesus is a bit of a jerk. Consider this from the article “Your Own Personal Jesus” (the article I mentioned in Saturday’s post):

In the 21st century, feminine Jesus lives on as the ultimate sensitive man…. This is Blue-State Jesus, a pacifist Democrat who drives a hybrid vehicle while advising people to cheerfully render their taxes unto Caesar.

One of these days (tomorrow, I hope), I want to offer an alternative to both the Jesus of Ann Coulter and Mel Gibson and the Blue-State Jesus Chris Suellentrop presents. It’s the Jesus of Walter Wink’s “Third Way,” who calls us to move beyond both fight and flight, to be neither passive nor aggressive. This is the gutsy and courageous Jesus hearty heretics like me can embrace. Stay tuned….
